The training course «systematic review on nursing care»

Within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, under the project «Accelerated – Improving Nursing at the Master’s and Phd level in the higher education system of Kazakhstan», an online training course «Systematic review on nursing care» was conducted by the Joanna Briggs Institute from April 4 to June 9, 2021. JBI, which is a leading institute in the field of evidence-based medicine, is located in Adelaide, South Australia.

The SKMA team of the Accelerated project: the head of the Department of Emergency Medical Care and Nursing A. A. Seidakhmetova, the assistants of the department U. A. Khojakulova, D. Auezkhankyzy, E. Sh. Yunusmetov were trained in conducting a comprehensive systematic review and received certificates.

The practical significance of the course is to train teachers to conduct a systematic review of various theories in order to obtain sufficiently convincing evidence in clinical practice. The training allowed us to acquire the ability to manage the strategy and methods of searching for data sources, on the basis of which to make scientifically-based conclusions that provide specialists with sufficient information to make decisions in practice.

Participants from universities in Finland, the Netherlands, and Kazakhstan discussed the design of quantitative studies and completed tasks on the correct choice of research design, conducted a critical assessment of research, and analyzed articles in small groups. The skills of the researcher in assessing the methodological quality of the study and determining the degree/risk were acquired.

During the training, participants had the opportunity to present their presentations, which discussed the research question and the inclusion and exclusion criteria for the performance review. The lecturers of the training gave feedback, shared their experience, and the training participants worked on their review in the SUMARI program.

According to the training program, the following topics were also discussed: qualitative (interpretive and critical) methodologies, critical evaluation of research, research data and data extraction, data analysis and meta-synthesis, presentation and interpretation of results, systematic reviews of textual opinion reviews, data extraction and synthesis, introduction to systematic reviews of mixed methods, Scoping reviews, Umbrella reviews. Participants completed tasks in groups and had the opportunity to present their presentations of protocols on qualitative research methods.

D. Auezkhankyzy made presentations on behalf of the SKMA team on the protocol of the quantitative method: «The effectiveness of moxonidine in the treatment of uncomplicated hypertensive crisis in adults 18 years and older in comparison with captopril» and «Studying the experience of nurses of psychological stress during the care of patients with COVID-19». The review issues, summary of the protocol, inclusion and exclusion criteria were considered.
